I have had the pleasure of photographing many of the world's great cities including St. Petersburg, Russia, Rome, London, New York, and Mexico City. Downtown Charleston has a unique sense of history not found in most American cities. Where else in the U.S. can one photograph so many beautiful structures from the late 17th century - literally scores of grand buildings within walking distance of each other. Not to mention the historic churches from the same era found in downtown Charleston.
I experienced a classic downtown Charleston moment last month as I walked down Broad street photographing the store fronts. I looked up (I have a sixth sense when it comes to birds) and saw a Bald Eagle soaring over the corner of Broad and East Bay Streets but got too excited to get anything but a blurry photograph. However, it reminded me why I am proud to call Charleston home.
